Primofort runs Stratasys PolyJet on the same Dongguan floor as our SLS and MJF lines — the process to reach for when a model has to look right, in full colour, straight off the machine, rather than just fit and function correctly in plain grey nylon.

Is PolyJet right for your part?

The honest version. PolyJet earns its place for one reason — appearance — and it is the wrong tool the moment the part needs to actually function under load.

Choose PolyJet when…

  • Appearance carries the message. Look-like prototypes, marketing and trade-show models, medical and anatomical models, consumer product mock-ups — anything a viewer judges by colour and finish.
  • You need full colour straight off the machine. No painting, no post-process tinting — the model prints in colour in a single build.
  • The part combines materials. Rigid and flexible, opaque and clear, can be printed together in one model.
  • Fine surface detail matters more than mechanical strength. PolyJet resolves fine features and smooth surfaces well; it is not judged on load-bearing performance.

Look elsewhere when…

  • The part needs to function, not just look right. PolyJet is not a production process for functional nylon parts — that's SLS or MJF territory.
  • You need a durable engineering nylon. PolyJet materials are photopolymer resins, not the PA 11 / PA 12 nylon families used on our SLS and MJF lines.
  • The part is large. PolyJet's build tray is sized for models and prototypes, not the large-format single-piece parts SLS handles.
  • You need a documented dimensional tolerance for a functional fit. See the accuracy figures below — they're real, but appearance work rarely needs them checked this closely.
The process

How PolyJet actually works.

Nothing like a powder bed. PolyJet jets liquid photopolymer droplets — like an inkjet printer, but building upward — and cures each layer with UV light as it goes.

Jet the photopolymer

Print heads jet tiny droplets of liquid photopolymer resin across the tray, layer by layer — multiple materials and colours can be jetted side by side in the same pass.

Cure with UV, immediately

A UV lamp on the same carriage cures each layer as soon as it's jetted, so the model is fully solid the moment the build finishes — no separate curing step.

Remove support, then finish

A gel-like support material is jetted alongside the model and washed or blasted away afterward, leaving the full-colour, multi-material part underneath.

Why full colour in one build matters. Because colour and material are placed droplet by droplet within the same pass, a single model can carry gradients, printed textures, and mixed rigid/flexible zones without painting or assembly afterward — the reason PolyJet is the appearance process on this site, not SLS or MJF. No Stratasys machine photograph and no full-colour sample photograph are available for this page yet; the process is explained in text rather than illustrated with a substitute. Materials

Rigid, flexible, and colour photopolymers — not nylon.

PolyJet's material family is photopolymer resin, cured by UV light — a different chemistry from the PA 11 / PA 12 nylon powders used on our SLS and MJF lines. Choose PolyJet for how a part looks; choose SLS or MJF for how it has to perform.

Colour is jetted into the model itself during the build — no painting or dyeing step needed to get a full-colour result.

Feel
Rigid & flexible

Rigid, opaque, and rubber-like flexible photopolymers can be combined within a single model, placed exactly where each property is needed.

Not nylon PA 11 / PA 12

Build size

A round tray, not a box.

Unlike our SLS and MJF machines, PolyJet's build platform is circular — quoting a rectangular X × Y × Z envelope for this process would misstate how the machine actually builds. Official figures for the current Stratasys J55 Prime tray:

1,174 cm²

Up to 1,174 cm² (182 in²) of usable printing area on the round tray — the platform footprint, not a length-and-width box.

Print height
190 mm

190 mm print height, with 187 mm as the maximum printable height in practice.
